The multicast part of the streaming media design is to unicast from Mac Minis (connecting directly to video sources) to QTSS and then multicast out to campus. The main reason was because, originally, the Minis will not be the main streaming distribution point with the XServ (running QTSS); so, there was concern of creating network bottleneck. This has been changed since the Minis will be moved to distribution point; so, the need of unicast to XServ/QTSS is not there anymore. The direct multicast from the Minis will actually provide better performance and reduce the possibility of another point of failure (QTSS).
However, streaming from out of the distribution point should still be relayed by QTSS.
